It's a pretty slow week for me, being the one before Christmas and all. So, in a desperate attempt to actually get something done I'm going through my spare network cables.
I find one that has what looks like hot chocolate clear into the RJ-45, coating the wires. I wonder why it stopped working. :/

Date: 2007-12-19 03:17 pm (UTC)Yeah. When I got there, I dumped out about 1/2 cup of orange juice that was in the keyboard. Might have had something to do with it.
(This was back in the late 1980s when keyboards were more susceptible to this stuff.)

Date: 2007-12-19 04:34 pm (UTC)I pulled a working cable out from one of our bar areas as the jacket and pulled free of the connectors on both ends. The ends were covered in a combination of soda syrup, dirt, grease, hair, and various flavors of booze. 'Gross' didn't even begin to cover it. And I have picture proof of the cable, too....

Date: 2007-12-20 02:02 am (UTC)If you ever need info on sealed network jacks/plugs/cords to replace something like that again, let me know. I have lots of manufacturer literature on the shelf for exactly this sort of application. I had to source and install some sealed jacks/cords in a commercial/industrial shop where things like grease, dust, and general grime had screwed up the keystone type RJ45 jacks the last vendor installed.
Pictures!
