We commonly have to get our clients to go to our WebX-type server to open a remote session on their machines. Its address does not start with www.
I have actaully come to enjoy letting them type it in wrong. Then I get to scold them with "Did I say to type www in front of [address]?" "Uh...no." "Alright then. Try it again, and this time type what I say." It lets me asse4rt dominance and lets them know that they are idiots right from the get go.
Of course, the best is when they say "MSN says it can't find www.[address]!" "That's because you typed in the search box and not in the address bar like I told you to. And you typed the wrong thing. THIS time, hold down Control and type 'o'. Now type what I tell you in the new box."
Oh I have. Usually I end up getting them to put someone else on the phone. But most of our non-native englishers know spanish and we can usually work out a way.
Spanish and english alphabets are mostly identical, that's not much of a problem. There was this one guy a while ago though...
1) Zero computer skills. As in, barely knows how to move a mouse. 2) Bulgarian. Does not speak a word of English, does not even know the letters. 3) Does not speak a word of Hebrew (I'm from Israel). 4) I don't speak a word of Bulgarian. 5) Speaks very broken Russian - the only common point between us, as I'm a native speaker and can KIND OF understand what he means to say. 6) His Windows XP is using Bulgarian UI.
I'm a Uniligual (English) Canadian, spreaking to a German native speaker (Admits that he thinks in German), who is translating into German for his Chinese Wife (Who doesn't speak English), who is working on a Win98 Chinese Laptop.
What, you no like-y www@www.sub-ether.net? (Well, actually, that address is a bit anti-social- it is a pipe to the dreaded B1FF filter (aka /dev/null), and hence anything sent to it will never be read. Ever.)
Recently, the Powers That Be at work printed up brochures with the site for students to access email, registration, and everything else online. The actual URL does not have a www in it, and typing it in brings up a search page. But it has the www on the brochure, because the people who made 'em? Not computer savvy.
You also left out "email addresses are not case sensitive." I chuckle everytime I ask a client for their email, and they go "Its www.lusername.com@whateveremailservice.com".

Needless to say, we did not get very far.
