And today was the day I bought a 10 pound sledgehammer as a tool for the help desk :D

Somebody saw me bringing it into the building and gave me an odd look.

"We're having discipline problems," I said.

Oddly enough, that seemed to satisfy him. He gave me a smile and nod, and I went on my way.

I can't believe it took this long for someone to finally ask me what the bloody thing is really for...

We have an imperial assload of bad hard drives we are disposing of (yes, we are recycling them). The security folks want to make sure the drives are not just bad, but destroyed, so no one can pull data from them. Disassembling each one of them to pull the platters out was proposed, but way too time consuming. I tried a drill, but even with a titanium or cobalt drill bit, I was only able to use it on three drives before the bit got dull. Then I thought of a sledgehammer. Not only does this do the job very nicely, it is very theraputic, AND I have folks waiting in line to have a turn at smashing the drives :)

I, myself, have a few sledgehammers in my office for grip/forearm strength work. I sometimes keep one behind my chair, in easy reach, not as a threat, but as a ... focus for clarity. It says, very eloquently, "We can behave like civilized adults, or ... not. Entirely up to you."

I have what appears to be a slot blanking plate out of a Cisco 7500 (fairly heavy grade steel bar) I keep on my desk affectionately named "The Cluestick".
