Got a request in today (and this is a higher learning facility) stating "User called and wondered if unplugging his machine over break would prevent unwanted spam from comming in his mailbox"

Yup.

Front line should have picked this one up, but didn't.. shows tech support is totally becomming the McJob of the 21'st century.

As a college student, I can tell you two things about the person referenced in that request:

1) He too, is a college student. Colleges are on "break" around now.
2) He is a liberal arts major, because NO SCIENCE MAJOR OF ANY KIND WOULD EVER ASK A QUESTION SO INCREDIBLY STUPID.

If you're on tech support, you can take a joke.

I would actually have to note one thing...
Since all I deal with nowadays are Computer Science Grad students and professors...

I have had people ask me similar types of questions...

Of course not to generalize, it truly is just a handful that are this pathetic.

just yesterday i had a customer ask for a supervisor at the beginning of our call because of something similar to this. he had received a lot of spam and was insisting that since his computer had been completely unplugged all day there was absolutely no way that those emails were put in his inbox. his explanation was that while his computer was unplugged someone had stolen his password and identity to use his email to spam his address. he refused to listen to anything i or the supervisor had to say because he was "too computer savvy" to accept our "excuses."

As long as it stays unplugged. Which it sounds like it needs to be. In fact you should reply to that email by saying the customer will have better luck avoiding spam if he just boxes up his computer and sends it back to the manufacturer.
