IN THE PRINTER ROOM
Laura: This stupid printer isn't working.
Me: *hits power button* *hits power button again*
Printer: *starts working*
Laura: Wow, you're amazing! How did you do that?

AT MY DESK
Cow-orker from the next office over: Jane? [Ed: my name is not Jane.] The laser printer is not working. It has a little orange light on.
Me: I don't know how to do detailed troubleshooting on that printer. I've just been restarting it, which seems to fix it temporarily.
Him: How do you do that? ...Do you just unplug it?
Me: *stare* No, I use the power button.
Him: Oh, wow! It has one of those? Where's THAT?
Me: *headdesk* Left side, towards the bottom.
Him: *leaves*


In other news, anyone know how to fix a networked HP LaserJet 2200dn? /le sigh

Have you tried pointing a web browser at it's IP address? I might have a funky interface with diagnostics.

Might not of course but it's worth a try.

Sadly, its web interface only allows you to dink with its network settings, not actually see error messages or (god forbid) fix problems.

Is your 2200 served by a print server? Has the driver on the print server been updated lately? If so, have all the clients deleted and readded the printer so the client machine will have the same copy of the driver as the print server?

Cold reset and reconfigure, perhaps?

Might as well blow out the NVRAM while you're at it too ...

NVRAM Reset:
1. Turn the printer power off.
2. Press and hold GO.
3. Turn the printer power back on and continue to hold GO until the Attention, Ready, and Go lights turn on.
4. Release GO.
5. The device lights will begin cycling from font to rear. The NVRAM initialization will run until completion and the device will go to the ready state.

Be warned, you'll have to reconfigure the Jetdirect after pulling that little stunt.

Self test page on the 2200, 2100:

hold down the GO and CANCEL buttons. release the GO button first, then the Cancel button. a test page should print.

I just had someone come in and complain about an error message on the printer so I told them to turn it off and turn it back on and they asked, "Unplug it?"

You'll need to do a search on HP's web site for "LaserJet 2200 error messages" to determine the exact problem with the printer.

Apparently power cycling is a dark art or something. Flicking a power switch on and off apparently scares the living fuck out of some people.

In my opinion, HP Laserjet 2200 models are just evil pieces of junk. A middle range printer (not a high end printer but obviously not a low end personal thing) that for some reason HP decided not to put a LCD panel on which makes troubleshooting and configuring the damn thing more "fun".

At my current workplace we have one and only one of these beasts. Not reliable at all, especially if you compare it to the HP 5si we have that won't die.
