I LOVE New Kit Day.

I admit it.

There's something about rolling out a new system that just makes me giddy inside.  All the sparkly bits are playing well with each other; everything is all shiny and new.

That is, of course, until the users actually start USING the product...

Fish: Thanks for the new PC!
Me: (Your manager bought it, not me, but) Sure, glad to help.
Fish: Just one thing.  When I'm in Outlook now, I have to type the whole person's name instead of the first couple of letters.  The old one didn't do that...
Me: (looks for LART Cannon)

I mean, I just replaced your old, decrepit, hamster-on-a-wheel-driven POS box with a brand new (in fact, shiny AND new), screaming fast (comparatively anyway), flat screen-equipped PC, including all your old programs (except for the junk you thought I'd never notice), and you complain about having to type AN ENTIRE NAME to email someone?

Forget the shot glass - leave the bottle!

I love that one. I get it all the time. My next favorite it "Where did all my websites go? I used to just click the drop down arrow and they were there!!"

Copy the .nk2 file from the old profile to the new. It's like transferring bookmarks in that it's a trivial fix that pays off in user satisfaction at a much higher rate than the effort.

Can't... It's company policy that all new PC's have all temp files removed during user migration. If they want the sites they have to have them in the favorites.

Hmmm...

But really, when it's holding preferences like that, you can argue that it's a config file, not a temp file. At least, that's how I would look at it.

Then again, I suppose it also depends on how much you care if users are happy. -Or how much the company cares.

Well the company would say it isn't a config file because you cannot set it ahead of time. It is also cleared if you clear you temp files.

And this is why, for the average luser, useability > power.

I used to be like that - that is, I would look forward to computer distribution time every year. Goodwill towards me and my department would soar for a few weeks, and I got a small high from people being so cheerful about their new computers.

Then I got fed up with trying to fit in all of the computer distributions into a four month window when each replacement required at least 8 hours of work per computer to back up data, change out the unit, restore data, and listen to the customers complain that the new computers don't have all of their custom software on it - the stuff we aren't licensed for and so we can't install. Now I have my minions do that work, and life is much better.

Except, of course, those occasions where my minions screw up a replacement...but then I get to fix the problem, bolster goodwill again, and all in a fraction of the time!
