(L)user: Yeah, can I get support on your firewall?
[profile] ebtb: Sure, which version are you running?
(L)user: Umm.. 1...point....5....
[profile] ebtb:  1.5? Sorry, we don't support anything older than 4.0 since that's when we purchased it from Company X.
(L)user: Well, Company X sent me to you guys....
[profile] ebtb: I apologize for the confusion, but that's a really old version of the firewall...
(L)user: It's only SIX years old!

I do tech support for cable/phone/internet. Had a guy call in for help with his internet. He's using Windows ME!!!!!

Gets mad at me because I am tell him it's not supported because it's too old. His response "It's only 7 years old."

20 mins of my life wasted explaining NOT SUPPORTED and it's TOO FREAKING OLD.

"XP? What's that?"

I think what really surprises me the most is that their computers are actually in good shape after all of those years - that they did not bite the dust at least after the first three years of not being under warranty.

And it's always Bill Gates'/Apple's/Satan's fault that they're not allowed to use the same piece of equipment throughout their lives.

well, you get a good stove, or a good car, or a good appliance, or whatever, and it will last for 20-30 years!

the hardware works just fine! I mean, it still works the same way it does 7 years ago.

It's like having a toaster which works exactly as designed, but your bread no longer can fit inside.

If we're insulting, we're serious.

If we're funny, we're serious.

If we're not any of these, then we're being sarcastic.

one must admit the computing industry is leader in programmed obsolescence.

Would you rather buy a $1,000 computer every 2-3 years or a $15,000 car every 8-10? The car industry *invented* obsolescence.

Hey, my laptop is 7 years old, and, geek though I am, still does just about EVERYTHING I want it to do aside from gaming. Including the most recent version of the OS available.
That makes me happy.

I still have a working Commodore 128 with Geos 2.0 operating system that could probably do everything (productivity-wise) I need to do. Except e-mail, and if I really wanted to I could probably hack out a program (in either Basic or Pascal - the only programming languages I have for the thing) to do that. Except I'd be stuck at 1200 baud. ^_^ /random

*snorks* I doubt I have the skills to build a wireless connection for my 128 , but I'm still pretty impressed that the thing even boots up after twenty odd years. The sure don't make them like they used to. *feels old*

I still have a system that is older which will boot, but the HD is kinda a doornail at the moment.
and no, they don't build em like they used to... woe is me for such a thing.

The 128 didn't even have a hard drive. It ran on floppy disks or a tape drive. Sometimes I would put the tapes in the stereo and listen to the data. *is weird* ^_^

Oops. The tape drive wasn't with the 128; it was for the TRS-80, which suffered death by cup-o-noodle.

That's no surpise (although still damn good) for a computer geek. But I'm surrounded by people who don't realize they have to up-date their anti-virus protection as well as run it more than just once a year.

Our university can only support Mac OSX Version 10.3.9 (or higher), Windows XP Professional, or Windows Vista (anything but Home edition). And it's not exactly old news, either (save for Vista), so everyone in IT gets perterbed when someone brings in even Windows 2000.

We're ending support of our W2k boxes this month. After this, our customers (in house corp. support) will have to pay $150/hr. for support on them. Really wish we techs saw the $$$.

As for old machines still running, I have a TI 99/4a that boots up and runs the built in Basic interpreter as well as some ancient cartridge games. 16K of RAM, baby!

I also have a 33 MHz Quadra 650 Mac that is still running. Is maxed out with 136 MB RAM, has two video cards that allow 3 monitors (with built in 512k VRAM on mobo) and a 4 GB scsi drive. Word 5.1a boots in about 4 seconds, Photoshop 2.5 and Illustrator 5.5 runs great. This thing is a brick and the case is strong enough for me to use as a step stool. I can't throw the damn thing away as it has never broken down. Damn you computer. Damn you to hell!

I remember hearing the story about the party at one of my old workplaces when Win98/ME was no longer supported.

Anyone that called in that day with those OSes were laughed at.

Especially the ones that tried to use USB Wireless Dongles to connect to the Wireless Router/Cable Modem units provided in some services.

Now, add in a ISPs buggy, proprietary Wireless Network Program to "Control" the signal.

That's actually a ripped off Netgear program that's been rebranded, and was pulled off the market due to huge errors in it.

And, after that, deal with FIVE desktop computers, none of which are hardwired to the Wireless Router/Cable Modem, nor even in the same room as it.

And the Reset button on the back didn't work due to an improperly uploaded firmware update. With a bad WEP Key, so can't access it at all.

Back in 1997 - 1998, the company I worked for still supported...everything.

We had offices with 286's running DOS 2.11 with 1meg of RAM that we had to know how to support. This is when Win98 was coming out!!!

Sheesh...

Hated that job. Cheap-arsed customers...

I've had customers get up me because I called their 6 year old POS IBM "old".

People don't get it - they may not evolve their use with technology but the applications still continue to.

I tell most people that a computer's lifetime is five years (Actually, it's closer to ten, with the ability to be much older if you know what you're doing!), and, that at 3-years of age, it has a mid-life crisis and needs a sportscar and a Trophy Drive.

It is such a relief to be able to say to people "I don't know how to support that"

They then get a little frustrated, but I point out that I knew how to support that 8 years ago when I was first starting out, and it was old then.

Usually they sigh, and then mutter something about having to "learn" a new computer.

I can't help but wonder if they didn't delay 10.5 just so that people didn't have obsolete computers that were still covered under AppleCare.

(I'm typing this on an iBook purchased in 2004 that won't be able to run 10.5.)
