NPR is reporting that Wipro, which we’re all familiar with, is outsourcing to the US. They are opening a design center in Atlanta, GA.

I don't quite know what to make of this...

...hey, don't I know you from somewhere? :)

And yea, I've been seeing a few stories about "Reverse Outsourcing". Interesting, no? The running commentary I've heard is that there's enough money in these firms now that they can afford the talent in the US....strange, but true.

I had no idea WiPro was that big. I work with them for software documentation for Motorola, so not in a tech support capacity. Interesting.

It tells me two things:

1) Our government, through it's own outsourcing, has invalidated our own IT industry.

2) We're doing a very good job building other governments while our people suffer. I expect China to outsource next.

Supposedly one of the reason for this is many federal and state government contracts specify what can and cannot be outsourced. By having an office in the USA, Wipro can qualify to bid on those contracts.

I see a new word being coined next: Insourcing.

Kickass. Wonder if they need any SQL developers, and whether they'll pay going market rate (which I'm making about 3/4 of currently...)

Well, there's some really really good reasons why we would see this:

1) There's a deeper pool of available talent for high level engineering projects here in America. This won't last, but it's good niw.

2) Wipro is no longer the lowest bidder because the competition for the bottom of the barrel is now global, and the labor market in india is pretty tight for educated employees. So, Wipro, like any other global business, looks for opportunities where they can find them.

3) I bet there's other foreign companies who have opened production facilities in the US in the past...

Yeah my company outsourced my job to them. They tried to hire me back cutting the people from 25-16 techs and then paying about 40K a year. Can you say um hell no! Oh and that is in the SF bay area too people. So don't start telling me how little you make.

From: [identity profile] turningallblue.livejournal.com
In SF Bay that's not much, but in many other parts of the country 40K is a comfortable salary.

UM no it isn't a decent wage to live on or try to provide a family for. I don't care where in the country you live. Unless you are an outsource to India, ... only and not even then anymore is 40K a good wage to try to live on.

If you're single I believe it is. I live very comfortably on a little less than that. If you have kids it's more difficult, but anything is with children.

I agree.

I was supporting a wife and kid on about 35k a year alone. I make considerably more than that now but I still managed on 35k/yr (but I do live in FL where there's no state taxes). Before that, I was making $10/hr (but she was working too for a grand total of about $18/hr). I believe what [livejournal.com profile] greeklady was trying to say is that you can't live to a certain standard.

Oh, envy. Ohio state taxes suck.
The only bad part of getting a good paycheck was seeing how much tax money was taken out of it. I went from making $9/hr to my current salary and the chasm between gross and net income was painful to see.

From Homefair.com salary generator.
Job Position Computer Operator
Market Area San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont CA
Median Salary $45,157

So even in one of the most inflated overpriced markets in the entire us 40K is low, but not WAI SUPER DUPER OMGWTF LOW.

Then we have the department of labor which puts the average salary for US workers at $36,764 (http://www.bls.gov/cew/state2002.txt) So, yeay for you, at 40k you get to be above average.

40 is an acceptable wage for non-management work.

Dear fruitloops, I'd like to make even 30k a year. =\

Stuck around 28-something, and that doesn't go very far with zee rent and student loans.

From: [identity profile] codevixen.livejournal.com
I live just fine on 29k, in Seattle, with high student loan payments... the wife works, too, but minimum wage with low hours. 40k isn't bad at all!

From: [identity profile] greeklady.livejournal.com
*Laughs*

Wow you people really need to get out more. You are settling for 29K? No wonder none of us can get a decent wage and why I skipped out on Tech Support. If that is all you want to aspire to, go for it. But don't expect me to pay for your social security and healthcare when you get to retirement age.
