Follow-up email from the read-my-mind guy:

Regarding the upgrade that had issues on screen 9, if you look in the screen 9 directory path, you should see both the messages logs from that screen that may have some OS level complaints about something the upgrade script was trying to do but couldn't AND you should see the upgrade.log file from Screen 9, the one that had the issues.

Of course it's too much fucking trouble for him to tell me which of the 12,000 lines of messages.log was the "OS level complaints about something the upgrade script was trying to do". Or even an approximate sequence of events. And my boss sent me an email bitching me out about the tone of my emails to him, in spite of the fact that I'd edited out most of what I really wanted to say before I sent it.

hey, you aren't doing anything else but waiting to read his mind, right? and you know all his programs and processes as well as he does, of course.

(kidding!)

I used to get calls at all hours with programmer gobbledygook. "Um, which server of the 200 I support is that on?" "It's job 47a." Found out later that the ops people had a list of which jobs ran on which servers (which I never had).
