Call me Salem. I've (officially) joined the ranks of Tech Support.

Outsourced for Dell Technical Support.

meh. You'll probably be hearing lots from me...

Is being outsourced for a company like that good news or bad news?

I would think it's better. You work for Dell, but nobody at Dell is technically your boss.

That doesn't really mean anything, though... If you really piss them off, they can end the contract (probably at some sort of expense though) or Dell can tell your company to get rid of you if you're an asshole.

Over all, I think being outsourced is better.

Unless the Dell supervisors are really nice, and your boss is a dick.

I agree...I think outsourcing is better. You may lose a contract with one company...but you'll always have work doing TS or CS for another company that is outsourcing.

Whereas...where I work, it IS the company that is manufacturing the product, but we have contracts with other companies for the product and support, and if we don't meet the numbers, it's crazy here. It's kinda funny to see managers running around like chickens with their heads cut off!!

I wanted to append my remark...outsourcing IN AMERICA is better.... Also, as long as YOU are working for the outsourcer...

I found that I much prefer working directly for the company. It may be the difference between large/small company, but I have direct access now to the tools, the people who write the tools, the server techs, etc... I've found bugs in the software and gotten them fixed. I didn't like how a certain process was being done, so I got a new one implemented. I discovered an outage and was able to call one of the server techs at home at 1AM to get it fixed.

When I worked at someplace outsourced, even if we knew 10,000 people were in outage we'd have no power to get it posted.
