Sometimes I get so tired of the clients whining and complaining about the age of our equipment-- as if I can do anything about it. So now I am starting to get a bit rude with them. I think I need to change jobs. I actually just said this to a client, and I wasn't really nice about it.

luser- "This Lexmark printer is so old that I think they brought it over on the Mayflower."

Me-- "They didn't have printers on the Mayflower. And actually the build date on that particular model is 2002, which is a few hundred years after the last voyage of the Mayflower."

luser- "I was speaking figuratively."

Me-- "I wasn't."

OTOH I just switched out a printer with a "manufactured on" date of 1992, which in "people" years *IS* pre-Mayflower. But yeah, I know what you mean.

Use sarcasm back at them: "That model wasn't built until 2002, which was a few weeks after the Mayflower."

"Why don't you just get a new one?" (The "...for me..." is implied.)

"No budget to replace working equipment."

"But it's only $$$" (Price from Best Buy for home stuff designed to print 10 pages a week.)

"Tell you what - YOU buy it and donate it to the company! But don't be surprised when... er, IF it gets realocated."

Our departments are responsible for funding their own kit. You think the printer sucks? Go find your boss and b*tch at him/her. And no, they don't get to choose which model they get even with "their" money. Just count your beans, print to the authorized, duly purchased and installed network printer, and STFU already...

Also, I don't care whether you have a personal printer or not - your boss is the one who said no. And it's not like the 20-step walk to the network printer is going to hurt you any - were it up to me, I'd put the damned thing on the roof and disable the elevator.

Yeah, I'm just a wee bit irritated...

I support printers and don't even get direct access to the printer.... SNIFF.
