Something has been breaking SSL on a few on my EU's machines, and the only thing they have in common seems to be some newer (8.0 or 9.0) version of the AOL client. What happens is that SSL simply stops working. Any https:// URL will go right to "Page cannot be displayed" without even trying.

AOL, Microsoft, and various other TSen have proven to be dumbfounded as to why it happens or how to fix it.

Well, i found a solution on some forum at the ass-end of the Internet:
at the run box or a command prompt:
regsvr32 softpub.dll

SSL should be fixed.

The single quickest way to break a PC is..

.. to install any ISP's disc on it. I've worked supporting both business and home users and most of the time an internet connection wasn't working it was because some muppet had just slapped a disc on it without thinking. In the former's case, it screwed up the business's settings on that PC completely. The muppet in question was apparently trying to circumvent the restrictions the company placed on not being allowed to use the internet unrestricted on their PCs. It's like pissing in a car's fuel tank and wondering why it doesn't work.
