This help desk monkey got ThinkGeek gift certs for her admins only to find out they didn't know about today. Did anyone else even know about this? Did any users do anything sweet?
So far the users have been great, no emails into abuse in hours. Either that or the ticket system is rejecting users again, either way happy day for me ;)
Last year, I did something against protocol - I think I didn't wear a tie - and my boss questioned me about it. I informed him that it was in celebration of Sysadmin Day.
He laughed his fucking ass off.
Then had me go home (10 min. away) during lunch to get a tie. :(
Wow... I hope you don't have to do anything hands-on. Sometimes I'd like to dress up but there's no possible way, what with all the under-desk-crawling and dusty things to carry, that I could (and the dress code reflects that).
I actually had it WORSE at that job: I was a JOAT (Jack of all trades; sysadmin, netadmin, server admin, tech support, help desk, etc.) at a LUMBER COMPANY. So not only was I carrying all these dusty computers and - even worse - blowing out caked dust from them, and crawling under desks and all that other great sysadmin stuff, but sometimes, I was doing it at a Truss plant, where everything you touch is caked with bearing grease and sawdust.
I did broach these topics, but his feeling was that we had to put forth a professional appearance, because the guy he replaced was such a slob. We had to overcompensate. However, if I knew in advance that I was getting dirty, I would compensate and wear a dress shirt and jeans; it was the best I could do, and even then, I would hear "I am strongly disappointed!".
All that said, that was actually one of the best bosses I ever had. If that is anyone's only disagreement with someone, then that's a good thing.
Of course, I knew about it, celebrated last year - went to lunch with all my fellow techs. I also have my demotivator calendar with SysAdmin day circled.
We get a calendar of special "days" and Sys Admin day was listed. One of must students was examining the calendar and exclaimed with pleasure that his birthday was International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

And I had to remind people to get that.
"It's a bit like fathers day and mothers day" I told them, they reckoned I made it up until I sent them many links.
Le Sigh :(
