"My browser keeps freezing."

"Ok we'll take a look at that. What version of windows are we working with?"

"Windows 98."

><

A computer is like a car, after much abuse it gets slow and old. Time to upgrade.

Now if your like us techies, you can make a computer last for a long time with proper love and care.

With these people, they let their cars rust and their tires pop.

Time to upgrade lady! We and even Microsoft won't touch it.

Well... that makes a lot of sense, actually.

Windows 2000? Good luck finding a real copy or one not loaded with malware. (True story: while screwing around in CompUSA one day - I was looking at monitors and my boss wouldn't get one for me through CDW, don't look at me like that - I saw a copy of Win2000 Pro for... get this... $189. For real. On the CLEARANCE rack. And this was two months ago.)

XP? Still a tad pricey for people in poor areas.

Vista? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA...

So yeah, that actually makes a bit of sense. And to tell the truth? From a security standpoint, it's making more sense by the day. I'm a big fan of Security Through Obscurity.

- just facilitated a national (US) Apartment management company's upgrade to XP from 98

- went to a college that sells outgets a huge discount on Microsoft products and was fully deployed to at least Win2k on all systems

- only had exposure to Macs in high school

- won't even tell you how many times i typed "cmd" in the Win98 environment

I remember hearing about the "No Longer Supported" Party at my old workplace.

There were noisemakers and everything! When someone got a call for Win98, they jumped up and the party happened. ;-)

One thing I figured I missed when I left there.

Hmm... I know of someone who is, I kid you not, building a steam powered computer. [he's kinda weird that way and decided to take steampunk to it's logical conclusion].

So far he's planning on using a 486 cpu at 380Mz, largely because it can tolerate the voltage fluctuations. I think I'll see if I can dig up my old Win98FE installer discs for him. [yup, I don't throw anything out].

But I don't think he's planning on actually using it for anything, it's more of an art piece than anything...

how in the heck is he going to make any 486 run at 380mhz?

I dealt with a girl once when I was still in tech support - she was running Windows 98 on a newish HP (right before XP came out), and I couldn't believe how fast it was. It turned out to be like an 800Mhz P3 with 512MB RAM. I told her to go buy a copy of XP Pro from the school for $10, since her machine had the specs to handle it.

But seriously. I had never seen 98 run so well in my life.
