Brain fart, in front of all the techs...
Jul. 19th, 2007 10:47 amUser emails us and asks why people keep telling him that replies to his emails bounce.
I take a look and he's accidentally set an alias to use firstname@domain.com as his From address instead of username@domain.com. No biggie -- I reply, cc-ing the list as per proceedure, and explain how he can fix it, but...
...wait for it...
... I forget to change the address in the reply and it bounces because I sent it to firstname@domain. Worse, the cc goes through and the whole list sees my boo boo.
*facepalm*

Date: 2007-07-19 09:37 pm (UTC)I killed our LAN's mail server once. See, I was doing a company-wide mail shot and made 2.5 errors, with a rather impressive result.
First mistake, I included my own address in the mailing list.
Second mistake, I pasted the list of addresses into the BCC, not CC and asked everyone to acknowledge receipt.
Third mistake, [well, not really a mistake] I left my usual "I'm not in my office" rule active... which does a 'reply all'...
Result, an infinite mail loop, with several hundred copies being added on each cycle... running all weekend.
Oy vey... it was looooong time before I was allowed to forget that one. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised that they are still newbie techs about it, years after I've left.
