A YEAR AND A HALF after I started working here, I figured out today that there are scripts and files set up (custom, in-house) that need to be modified whenever a new group is added to our groups table in the NIS table setup. Nobody mentioned the existence of this to me, I found it by being curious about a changed file I saw in the logs (a new group was created yesterday, so the file showed up in this morning's log check).

This is excruciatingly painful because a little less than a year ago I was given the task of 'cleaning up' the groups, since there are so many of them and they all have stupid names and there are lots of redundancies and so on. If I had been told of the existence of these files and scripts, I could have used them on the group clean-up project (that ultimately died a neglected death, mostly due to lack of information on my part). Gee, maybe the project wouldn't have died then, you think?

You mean you didn't just assume this? *sarcasm* I know how you feel - they do that kind of stuff where I work all the time - Recently I got a project to go around the whole building and get the location for every phone extension. A few days later after I was almost done with the project, they opened another one asking for information on whether each phone was analog or digital. I was ready to slap someone.
