[identity profile] scimon.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] techrecovery

It's always the days when you got stupidly drunk the night before that the server decides to die isn't it? I mean the HDD could have filled up last weekend when I didn't have a shitty hangover but noooo it has to wait until this morning. And it decides to corrupt the /tmp directory at the some time. Joy.

So I'm randomly surfing the net while fsck is running (Mmmm 56GB of crap....) and I spotted a link to this group and thought ah yes I must join. So Hi. I'm Simon and I managed to blag the job title 'Head of IT' by the simple expedient of being the entire IT department. How's your day going?

I need more coffee.

Use Cacti and SNMP to monitor disk space.

Ugh. So hungover. Why am I awake at 7:30am.

No. Use munin. It's much much easier to configure.
cacti is good if you have many servers but a PITA for just a few servers.
and stay away from nagios. It's a serious PITA.

Hey - Thugs are decent! Summoning gang wars? Sending them after a target only to detonate them? Well, I guess you can do that with any minion, really...

Wish I could send my real-life minions out on suicide missions to take out idiotic enemies for me... *sigh* Then I'd have fewer last-minute requests for server space for classes 15 minutes before the start of said class.

Last I checked, long-skirted Schoolgirl Outfits classified as "Dress Code".

And I have yet to see a dress code that demanded undergarments!

...

Wait, no, sorry, I have.

One job I worked (Call Centre) at had a guy that argued against the Dress Code and came to work in a Kilt in the traditional style.

Now, it's an "Office" full of immature High School Students who are there strictly for the job. What do *YOU* think happened to ensure that "Undergarments will be worn *AT ALL TIMES* while at work" was written into the rules.

Just. Like. That.

The two of you just made my morning SO much better... seeing as I'm coming off a weekend and starting the rest of the Month in HELL. (Cat sitting two weeks, helping friends shoot a short film, painful dental work, and training the last week of the month.)

Catgirls wearing skirts (And *NOT* wearing underwear) makes everything better!

And something tells me I'm going straight to hell for some reason. :-S

It's not like we (okay, at least some of us) won't be right there with you. Oh wait, maybe that's what makes it hell......... ;)

Hell is other people.

Tech Support people know that better than anyone save Soldiers.

Even as anti-social as I can be, for myself it's more a case of Hell is stupid (or not-thinking) people, speaking as both a techie and as the spouse of a career soldier. It's those numbnuts that make life harder than it has to be for the rest of us -- relatively smart folks generally know when to gtfo and come back later (if at all) with non-real-emergency stuff. Or at least they learn after the first slavering growl or two as opposed to those who never learn at all...

Guess I'm just getting cynical in my old age.

And I'm not even that old yet. :-S

Our dress code requires underwear too.
Think ...

Random call centre guy.
short shorts
lounging on a couch.
sproing!

to which everyone went, "Argh! Mine eyes! They be bleeding!"

Thankfully, many many years before my time started here, but the story goes on.

I just wish for a dress code that'd let me wear skirts or kilts to work.
::sigh::
