[identity profile] duality.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] techrecovery
I'm wanting to look into various programs out there that are Project Management based but first I wanted to check with the other techies. Do you guys know of any software that you really like from a technical standpoint or any that are absolute buggy pieces of crap?

Um, Just a word of advice; you might want to post this over in [livejournal.com profile] techsupport_ot....

Having said that, I've never had a change to use any project management software, so I can't help there.

Agreed - I'm assuming this will get posted over there, but when you do, please give us a bit more in the way of details as to what you're looking for (what kind of project, what aspects you need it to manage, your role in the project and what you are responsible for, platform requirements, etc.) so that those who know can help. Unless you want your answer to be somewhere between a flame and "that depends" :).

Are you writing software, managining servers, installing a network...

For yourself;

Write down the online description of what it is you are to do.
Write down under that everything it entails (that you know of thus far.
Under each of those, what you think you will need to do them.

If you have NO idea where to start, start with listing your resources and deliverables.

Time lines are good too. Make them buy you MS Project.

I have no mercy. I'm in I.T.

Seriously, it may be a pain, and overkill (or underkill in others) but suits respect and fear anyone that uses it.

Different people mean different things when they say "project management software", so it really depends on what you're trying to do.

For myself, I really like the look of Cyberience Project Manager (http://freshmeat.net/projects/cyberience_project_manager/), just based on what I've seen in the screen shots and docs. Unfortunately, haven't had a chance to try it out "live" yet...

The mildest flaming you will get for posting this in a rant community:

Gah. Oh... that hurts just thinking about. It's bad enough that people actually try using Outlook for things like calendaring and e-mail.

Okay - *now* I apologise. I didn't realize that you were ranting without ranting.

Very zen of you.

In fairness, she's been a contributing member (okay, a lightly contributing member) of this community for years.

Long as I've been here there's been exceptions made for members in good standing.

Not saying that we shouldn't help him. :-P

Just wondering when we decided to start being fair? ;-)

But of course. All software is crap. All operating systems suck. The trick is to find an application that sucks least for you, on an OS which is the least awful to accomplish that task. Left as an exercise to the student.
