  • User gets new laptop.
  • Instead of calling helpdesk for help setting up Lotus Notes, user decides he will save us the trouble and copy the entire Notes directory from his old PC into the Notes directory on his New PC.
  • User calls helpdesk tech, namely me, to complain that for some reason (he has no idea why) Lotus Notes on his new laptop won't open.
  • Helpdesk tech sobs in a quiet, manly way as spirit breaks just a little more.

i don't mean to be offending, but don't you make notebook trainings?
normally when we give away new machines we train the lusers on them and we make sure, that everything (special programs, personal files, settings) gets transfered to it from the old machine.

Weeeell, to play devil's advocate, I have seen setups where that would have worked. Fresh lappies with Notes installed as part of the build, personal settings on networked user drives, very little in the Notes directory on the hard disk and what there was being completely portable between desktops and laptops.

Of course, that also included a launch script that tested the Notes installation and redownloaded anything missing/corrupted, but hey. Big shop, lotta money.

Ummmm, actually that isn't such a horrible idea. If both machines have the same version of notes that actually should work (I've done that before myself).

Of course, it only works if both versions of notes are the same :)

I think he was talking about the software. The one that require runing an installer :-)

(I could be wrong too, if that's the case, just hang up)

Ah if that is the case where they need to "install" notes not just set it up then yes it will not work. It also depends where they store their id file. I had one company store it on the personal share and the log in script allowed them to get their notes on any machine basically. Archives and such were located there as well so again no problem.

My current company, copying over the data directory is exactly what I do and it works fine. Though our LN is part of the image and all info is stored locally on the HDD. Which is fine but a fun way to explain to people when their HDD crashes.

having to use or support Notes in any form should be against the Geneva Convention.

Why would anyone complain about not being able to run Notes? *bah-dum-ching*
