I know I posted about this before.. I couldn't figure out the easy way to find out what OS people were using.

I gave up, and now just ask them straight up, What operating system are you running?

It makes me think of this community and I thouroughly enjoy the excellent answers people give me.

For example, the call that I am on right now.

What operating system are you on?
>Americans Onlines.
*stifles laugh* OK, what operating system is your computer running?
>yes, they sent me a free trial.
What version of windows are you using?
>home
Alright you're on Windows XP Home Edition?
>no, emachines home windows

alsk;djfjkl;asdf

That's all.

Also.. why do customers fight with us about things that we can't change?

Example.. the man I spoke with a little while ago got mad at me because 'just because my phone got shut off doesnt mean my dsl shouldnt work!'

Sir, the dsl is attached to the phone line. When they take your phone down they take the dsl with it. Want it back? Pay your bill. Thanks for calling.

I got to the point where I just assumed they were running windows. Normally I will ask them "Are you running Windows?" and if they "duh", or "uhhhh" or "I'm an idiot and I have no idea", then they're running Windows. Mac people know enough to know that they're using a Mac (must be the pain from going to the store and seeing one small tiny shelf of software in a store otherwise packed with software boxes), and people running Linux... well, honestly, they should already know what they're doing, and should only call you to ask direct questions.

Find out what KIND of Windows they're running is a completly different ball of wax, however.

Have them push Windows and pause at the same time and read what it says under system...

winver is your friend, unless of course they're a Mac user. In that case, run far away.
