It never ceases to amaze me that even though the door to the computer lab is shut (I have to keep it unlocked in case an employee comes in), there's a sign on the door that says "Closed", and there are no lights on, that students will still walk their asses in here and sit down at a computer. Then they look at me like I'm the idiot when I politely inform them that the lab indeed, is CLOSED.

WTF people, wtf?

It doesn't amaze me. Seen it too many times. Do they have the excuse of having English as their second language (many of ours do)...?

Indeed, I also find this common. Locally I just lock the door; anyone who needs to get either has a key, or can just knock..

This doesn't stop some students from mashing themselves against the door, though. :-)

Well, it's pretty simple, you got some a$$hats that feel the rules don't apply to them. Bust 'em. You don't even need to be polite about it. Call campus security.

Nah. I suspect that they're simply operating on auto-pilot and aren't even consciously thinking about where they're going.

Unfortunately, they still tend not to have the humility to realise their error and back out apologising, but most people interacting with tech support have insufficient humility. :-)

That is an optimistic appraisal of the situation, indeed. But, if they don't have the humility to admit error, that would tie in to my a$$hat corollary.

I blame experimentation with non-phamacutical drugs. ;-P

Ugh, I remember those days. There were more than a few days when the night shift would forget to lock one of the doors to the lab and students would assume that it was an all-night lab because "Hey, the door was unlocked!" Never mind the lack of an SA, the lights being out, the building being locked, and all the computers turned off, if one door was unlocked the students were using it. Thankfully I never had to call security on them, but it was always shocking to show up for first shift in the morning to find the lab full of students.

The thing that annoys me most about that (when I was the one seeing that) is that they're frakking university students - how the hell are they so stupid?

It's that lovely little parenthesis they see under the sign. The one which says "Except for you, of course", or words to that effect. The one which is invisible to everyone else (including the person who wrote the sign).
