Sometimes I worry ..
Mar. 15th, 2007 07:41 pm.. when a hard drive is not even visible as a *device* on the bus ..
.. and the machine will only boot to the install disc, and the installer doesn't recognize that there's a drive to install on ..
.. and the person who's calling about this has no backups and critical data was on the drive ..
.. and every time the news gets worse ..
.. she laughs harder.
It's times like those that remind me laughter at the humorous irony of one of Murphy's clearest victories sounds an awful lot like the hysteria that comes before a nasty breakdown. And I wonder if I should look up some local crisis hotline numbers for her. Fortunately they weren't necessary ..
.. on *this* call.

Date: 2007-03-16 01:11 am (UTC)I went out to a doctor's office one day to see about some data recovery. Their floppy disk backups were unorganized to the point of uselessness, and the drive that held the past six years of medical and financial records was a Fujitsu P.O.S. that took a fatal dump. (Fujitsu was in the media over this, as they sued their hard drive controller chip vendor, Cirrus Logic, over a very large batch of chips that had a fatal thermal defect in them which caused the drive to fall off the IDE bus in a very bad way.)
We ended up fedexing the drive to Ontrack, and they said that they couldn't get back anything, and charged the poor client two grand for the attempt.

Or she'd just had one of those weeks where if you don't laugh, you'll crack and go postal with a chainsaw.

... or maybe it should be a chick. A busty chick.... Mmmm....
... I'll be right back. <grins>

Date: 2007-03-16 03:10 pm (UTC)Where I work, if they haven't backed up, that's their issue. LoL SO sucks to be them!
We are not God. We take care of the machine and their data loss is not our concern. Teaches them just how important backing up truly is.
*insert evil cackle here*
