Yesterday morning I get a call from the only place I still do on-site for. The Intarweb is down because the "Comcast business networking" box between their modem and our VPN router has let out the magic smoke. Comcast told us that box was no longer necessary OR supported, and we should just plug our router directly into the modem. OK! I get there (coming off an 8 hour night shift, mind you) do just that, and get absolutely nowhere. I get a tech on the phone and we realize the cable modem is refusing to cooperate. Comcast agrees to get someone out there that afternoon to drop off a new modem.

I go home, get some sleep (yeah, right...) and return around 4:30. Comcast tech has come and gone. We have a new modem. Except this thing isn't anywhere close to new. It's old. It reeks of burnt silicon. And the power brick rattles when I shake it.

Goddammit.

Call Crapcast again, tell them about the big, juicy shit sandwich they just handed me. They say the best they can do is get a tech back out there tomorrow with another modem. Yeah. As soon as I get home, they call me and tell me they'll have a tech there by 8:00 that evening. Wow, OK! I head back and wait... and wait... finally, I call their dispatch back and discover the tech has been involved in a CAR ACCIDENT. We're back to tomorrow morning.

Screw you guys, I'm going home.

Work another night shift and return to meet a couple of "contractors" for Comcast. Geniuses. But they manage to screw the coax onto the modem and plug in the power cord. I can do the rest. Verify cable is up, call support, get the static IP set up.

Connect our router. No ping. No link light on the modem. Huh? The WAN light on the router is lit.

Hell, it's even lit when it's not plugged into anything!

OH FUCK.

The piece of shit that blew up and started this whole clusterfuck took the WAN port of our router with it.

Still here.

Sounds like you took a surge via cable or power line....

Ouch. Your poor router.

Is Comcast getting a bill for blowing up your equipment and wasting your time?

Speaking as a former Phone Mook from a... "Very Similar" company, shall we say...

My condolences.

The Phone Guys hate the Field Techs as well.

Be glad you got one that actually knows *HOW* to screw in a co-ax cable.

I had to walk one Tech through how to hook up a Cable TV Box to a VCR, then a TV. All this while I'm a Specialist Internet Tech Support Agent for Wireless, of course, because we're outsourced and "Want to keep the customer happy." :-S
