Got this request into our helpdesk today:

End User: My IP address has been blocked for spam from AOL.  Can I have a new IP?

Um.. yeah, right..  No you can't have a new IP..

Ha! Are they, by any chance, in southeast Florida?

How bad do you have to be for a virus to call you spam :p

It actually doesn't take much to be blacklisted by AOL. My school's smtp servers were marked as spam, so every email to an AOL address from our domain was being refused.

And it's utter hell to get off the blacklist, because AOL deliberately makes it difficult to speak to someone with a clue.

If we're sure we've gotten rid of the infected customer, we find it's often easier to change the IP the mailserver is sending from for a while...

Going through the notifications that AOL sends back whenever someone reports a message as spam, fully 1/3 of the time it's something sent by a human. Heck, there was one guy that was ripping off folks in a Neopets scam and then reporting their replies as spam...

the last time I suggested that one of our idiot customers who belives that website = IP address go ask ARIN then suggested that the only way he could get his /24 was to have two connections redundant and then set them to failover via BGP.

He still can't justify the /22 he originally asked for.
