Oh man, I just got off of an hour call just setting up mail for Windows Vista.

Also defining how the user accounts work, and how to shut off the computer, instead of putting it into standby.

Seriously, all I want to do is go home, get a gun, shoot the "designer" of Vista, then drink till I pass out.

That is all.

Stupid question: Does vista pester you as to WHY you want to shut the computer down like server 2003 does?

No. The default behavior, is when you press the windows button (no longer labeled Start), and then the "power" button in the menu, is to immediately go into standby, no questions asked.

Considering that about 80% of modern computers *still* have issues with standby, I'd say it's a bad thing.

Now hibernate, Hells yes. Hibernate is the Bee's knees, the wasp's nipples, the erogenous zone of every insect for a 6 mile radius.

Um, if you install Vista on anything that's having problems with standby, that's going the least of your troubles. The fact that every time you load an application, you might as well take a coffee break, now that's a bit more of a pressing concern.

That makes sense on a server, which is far more likely to be left running most of the time, and when it *does* need to be shutoff the whowhatwherewhenwhy recorded. Why in the world would even MS do that for desktops?

Well, in a company where the policy is to leave the computers on overnight for stuff to be pushed out, it gives them a half-way decent chance of getting useful info on why a user shutdown their workstation.

On a home computer, it can be fun to enable to just piss off family members who call just a little too often for free tech support ;)

not that I've ever done that as a form of revenge on my family...

Let's not forget the denial of read/write access to %TEMP% for ANY account should you disable User Account Control.

And the annoying high-pitched squeal caused by "resonating capacitors" introduced by Vista's new power management features onto laptops.

And the lack of ability to change the fucking color of the selected item in the Start menu to ANYTHING BUT POWDER FUCKING BLUE when using Aero.

And yes, the (so far) inability to change the default behavior of that button from Standby to anything bloody else.

I have dealt with Vista for exactly one day and already I want to fucking murder whoever made that monstrosity.

Whoever decided that the ribbon on the start menu that conveniently would state "Windows Vista" was a waste of programming time and nixed it...I want to kick them in the babymaker.

I will not be touching Vista with a thirty-foot pole until it's had at least two Service Packs and all my software (games included) is guaranteed to work with it.
Oh, and until I have at least 4 gigs of RAM.

Heil Bill frickin Gates!

And, you know, that sounds like a good idea. Unfortunately, MS will most likely push to update Office in such a way as to (almost) require Vista. So, we'll get dragged into it anyway.

At least I can use OpenOffice on my home PC.
