Actual quote today from a customer:

ME computer luser> OK. Thanks! I really hate to update my ME - I love the idea that it’s so old that nobody is writing viruses for it!

O.o

Why would anybody even need to write a virus to make ME not work right? :-P

Indeed. It took all the cosmetic niceities from windows 2000 and all the grinches from 98 SE and added a nice layer of drool proofing to make it horrid to support.

Last place I worked at, we had a few machines running ME. We put 98se back on them so as to have something easier to support and deal with before we replaced the machines with XP based systems.

My mother has a ME cd lying around for some reason. Whenever an OS breaks, she suggests putting that on it. I can only hope she's toying with me.

I see a way to solve this problem: convince her to roll back to Windows 95. After all, if ME is safer than XP, 95 must be the best of all! Then the next time she calls, you can tell her you don't support that OS any more.

Windows 3.1! Or better yet, BOB. That should have heaps of security through obscurity.
