I work at Local Computer Store 1. There's one main competition place across town. LCS2. Woman brings in just her hard drive for data recovery. Drive goes in queue of systems to be worked on. A few days later I receive this phone call:

W: Hi, I brought my hard drive in to you for data recovery.
Me: Okay...
W:Well, LCS2 is handling the warranty work on my computer and I was wondering if you could pull my hard drive out of your queue and driveit over to them.
Me: ....
Me: Um...No. You're welcome to come pick it up and take it over yourself.
W: *sounds disappointed* Oh...okay. You're sure you can't take it over for me?
Me: No.

I would have said, "Sure, I will hire a limo to send your hard drive to the other store and hire 3 sherpa's directly from Nepal to handle it along the way, you will be paying with your credit card for this, yes?"

Then respond to her 'WTF?!!!' with "Or you can of course pick it up yourself"

When I was working for Staples retail I used to get calls like this all the time, and I would be a total bitch to someone when they did this. it bothered the hell out of me.

And why didn't she have the other place do the data recovery? I mean, don't tak this the wrong way, but if it's in for warrenty work over there, why not have them do it?

Probably because she was an idiot, and found out that she would have to pay for the work, if the drive was not in the machine.

Warranty work is paid by the computer maker, and computer makers' warranties don't cover user data. So if the shop that does warranty work charges more per hour, she might have a "good" reason for taking it elsewhere for data recovery.

Ugh, that's like the people who bitch out Blockbuster employees for not taking Hollywood Video returns and vice versa.
