How did WIndows XP possibly f%^$ over an upgrade from win2k this badly?

What do you mean the windows installer isn't installed?

SP2 slipstream even, so you'd think MS would have gotten it right by now.

What really sucks is that there are 52 updates to Win2k Service Pack 4 on Windows Update (if you include IE 6) and 2 more if you add in DirectX 9.0c and Windows Media Player 9.

I know this because I installed it on Tuesday. I wish they had done an update rollup for Win2k right when they stopped supporting it.

Exactly the reason why we typically don't do in-place version upgrades here.

I did three of them this month without a hitch. Did you update the 2K machine fully including SP4 AND check it out for spyware/virus?

Okay - I admit I just got VERY lucky. I'd saved all the files and had the 2k re-install disk ready to go. Because, really, that's the FUN way to spen a saturday - reinstalling Win2k without the damn service packs because the OEM I've got for it is REALLY old, THEN installing the XP pack a SECOND time.

and wiping this machine was NOT an option, because it's a beancounter's machine and some of their financial software appears to be missing its licenses install media.

after the XP upgrade, which appeared to go OK, the WMI service wasn't working, so the installer for the NIC, etc.. wouldn't run. Turns out the WMI service isn't even THERE. I had to "rundll32 setupapi.dll InstallHinfSectionblahblahblah..." to get it to go.

It never installed remote desktop (client or service) either. I guess it thought it was XP Home. Whatever. At least it still logs into the domain.

Just so ya know, booting from the XP disc and doing a repair did NOT install the missing components. So it wasn't just a setup glitch or something. Damndest thing I've ever seen.
