The procedure for resetting a managed system back to factory defaults includes disconnecting the system from the power. I.e., unplug it.
Engineer: I'll disconnect the power cables from the power supplies, pull the power supply assembly out, and flip the dip switches on the system planar board.
Customer: No, you need to disconnect the power from the wall outlet.
Engineer: Well, I need to disconnect the cables from the power supplies so that I can remove the assembly.
Customer: No, you need to unplug them from the wall!
Me: o.O

The customer is either being anal-retentive, or is totally ignorant of how ELECTRICITY works. It doesn't matter which end of the electron hose you disconnect.

In response to the following: "The customer is either being anal-retentive, or is totally ignorant of how ELECTRICITY works."

I'm sure I'm not the only one who could say, perhaps the best answer is both?

Somebody once told them that "You need to unplug your ____ from the wall before you work on it" and it's gotten burned into their hollow brain housing units as an Immutable Rule.

In defense of the engineer, a lot of larger systems actually hold onto quite a lot of power when they are brought down. When I've needed to do something inside the system (like a jumper move) it's actually been beneficial to pull the PSUs. 9 out of 10 times just doing a power down and yanking the plugs and then waiting 15 minutes solves the problem.

Now, now. Don't you know that if you leave one end plugged into the PSUs, those electrons can dribble out all over the floor? I'll bet that's what happened to the l/j datacentre - puddles of electrons everywhere.

Not a bad idea to pull the PSU end...

When you pull a plug from the wall, you know you're disconnecting something from AC.

When you pull the plug from the PSU, you know WHAT you're disconnecting from AC.

I have had nasty surprises owing to mislabeled plugs on the supply end.
