Why can I ping that?
Oct. 6th, 2006 02:54 pmMy coworker just asked me a *facepalm* question. The system he's working with has an IP address of 192.168.0.1/16. "Why is is that when I have ALL of the network cables disconnected I can still ping 192.168.255.255?"
*facepalm* Ummm...because that's the broadcast address and you are pinging YOURSELF!
And he just took a TCP/IP class a few months ago, too.
EDIT: Fixed the subnet mask. Stupid "force of habit" made me type /24.

Date: 2006-10-06 09:15 pm (UTC)I was just thinking about that tale of the guy who wiped his own hard drive by "hacking" someone's IP address, which they gave to him as 127.0.0.1. ;)

Make sure foot is securely in the mouth...
Date: 2006-10-06 09:12 pm (UTC)192.168.255.255 is not the broadcast address for 192.168.0.1/24
Re: Make sure foot is securely in the mouth...
Date: 2006-10-06 09:26 pm (UTC)*facepalm*
I knew what I was talking about...it's just that I typed /24 out of habit. I've also been up since 05:45, so I'm rather tired.
