@$@#()& browser crashed and I lost the chatlog before I could paste it....

I just got some rather lousy customer service from NewEgg. All I needed was to order a 120mm case fan to replace a dead one in my brother's computer. I found what I needed, except the item description didn't say if the fan came with mounting screws or not.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16835129030

I poke around on their web site and look for fan screws, but what I really want are these silicone rubber things that aren't really screws but you use them like screws and they help reduce vibration noise a lot better than metal-on-metal fasteners. Only, I don't know what those things are called so I had a hard time finding them though the site's search engine.

So I poke around and find their live chat, and get someone named "Janet" online and ask them if they can tell me if the fan comes with screws or not. She tells me the only information she has is what's on the site, and to try contacting the manufacturer. I'm thinking probably Antec packages their fans in various ways, so I don't know that that will help me out, so I figure I'll just order some screws to be on the safe side, and if I have a few extra screws when all is said and done, oh well.

So I ask if she can direct me to where I can find fan screws on their site, since they don't seem to have an obvious category for this, and their search engine doesn't seem to be all that helpful when I type in "screws". The response I get is that she has the same resources available to her as I do, basically saying "Why don't you look for them yourself?" in so many words.

So I'm a bit nonplussed, and say "This isn't very helpful. Usually I get better assistance from New Egg." To which she responds that they don't really have any kind of technical or sales staff, and asks me if I have a questions related to areas besides that.

At this point, I don't believe what I'm reading... what the hell other kinds of questions could someone possibly ask a customer service chat person? And how can someone flat out admit that their company has no sales or technical staff? I would be SOOOO fired if I said something like that to someone... even if it were true!

So I think for a minute, and type:

"Umm... do you like baseball?"

Because I literally don't know what this person on the other end can actually talk to me about. But she just says if I don't have any more questions about New Egg that she'll end the chat session to assist other customers.

I tried to copy the session log because it was so classic, but as I did so the browser crashed:( STUPID Javascript!!!

I've never been so bummed by a browser crash before.

I wonder if they read this community, but given how clueful they were, I kinda doubt it :)

Java != JavaScript. Please do not make me bash my head against my desk whilst reading the comments on this community. That should be reserved for the actual posts only.

I still hate java, because every now and again the JRE will hang the browser bad enough that I have to preboot the machine to fully clear it.

Fortunately, it's happening less often, now that developers are coding to ONE java standard, instead of the hodge-podge of a really old version of the Sun JRE, a newer version which is not backwards compatible, and the ever fantastic and outdated Microsoft Java VM.

(Yes, our standard desktop image at work has ALL THREE installed. ::rolls eyes::)

I've asked Newegg's support for questions regarding products before (in one case a hard drive) and they told me to contact the manufacturer, in that particular case Maxtor. The person even offers to get me the phone number... and the number I get? Newegg's phone number!

Their prices aren't even as good as they used to be, but their shipping still generally rocks. Their chat support is for people who can't read the website for themselves.

Sadly, I'm the opposite end of the spectrum - the few tiems I've spoken to them they've been arseholes. And I'm not really demanding pretty much my questions are along the lines of yours "Looking at fan XXX - do you sell fan grommets with those?"

Thank christ I have PcCaseGear (http://pccasegear.com.au/) *glomps them*
