final conclusion of the saga related http://community.livejournal.com/techsupport/1106992.html

So. Marco at Dell, having replaced the wireless NIC, came up with the bright idea of putting in a new HDD and applying the Dell image.

Laptop worked perfectly. There's an issue with our corp image which causes the conflict with the IRQs.

... yeah. So, the problem with the lappy is our fault.

So I am going to have to do a manual install of the entire OS and all drivers, then take a specific image for this one machine.

Anyone have a Tanto to hand? I think they are handy for seppuku.

*sighs*

EDIT TO ADD:
Thanks to our own [livejournal.com profile] fiannnachruinne and to Marco from Dell for getting to the bottom of this!

I feel a bit guilty here as well. I was trying to help you figure it out from my end and didn't even think about it. You mentioned the reinstalling and it didn't even occur to me it could be a software issue. Well, no, that's not true; I thought it several times, actually, just never acted on it. Which I guess makes it especially bad. I've been on the phones for seven years now. I learned long ago that I should really trust my instincts on weird issues like this. The fact that the idea of a software problem kept coming to me should have really clued me in. So I want to apologize to you for not saying something about it and maybe saving you some headache.

That's.... BEYOND idiotic.

It's a well known fact that The Keyboard Shall Occupy IRQ 1, And No Other Device Shall Occupy IRQ 1. Ever. At least for AT and PS/2 keyboards.

Oh wait, I just dated myself because I have this old fashioned nothion of hardware devices having a seperate IRQ line...

ah, yep. Windows favorite IRQ dumping ground. Left to it's own devices I think it would put EVERYTHING on IRQ 9.

You're lucky. My new office PC (Optiplex GX-620) won't recognize the Netware client at bootup - goes straight to the windows one, THEN the nw client.

I got told that it was a bad Dell image, and the fix was to reformat my hard drive...which is NOT AN OPTION after I set the #_$*#_()* thing up. I'm just going to have to live with it.
