...it's a canadian civic holiday today (like your 4th of July, but not...in fact I have no idea what we're celebrating. Probably caraboo). I'm canadian. I support Americans who don't have the day off.

I hope we're not understaffed today....

Are you celebrating moose?

Cheese curd?

Gravy on fries?

I'd celebrate gravy on fries if I had a chance.

Gravy on fries is TOTALLY worth a national holiday. Gravy AND cheese curd on fries, I dunno, but plain ol' fries with brown gravy, color me there.

In the same boat as you, let's hope they aren't too bad today.

Here in Alberta it's called Heritage Day... I wouldn't say it's like 4th of July (Canada Day is).

here's (http://www.gov.ab.ca/acn/200608/20334CF56BE13-9EA5-8CD7-E1A3DA5F2A13D17F.html) some insight on Heritage Day.

For me, it makes no diff, cuz although I'm not in tech support (though it would be fair to say that's part of my job DESCRIPTION), I *am* in Call Centre, so I worked last night and I work tonight. heh. :)

At some point it was Simcoe Day. The basic idea is to have a long weekend between Canada Day (July 1 for non-Canucks) and Labour Day (First weekend in September, long weekend)

Oh and it's BC, Alberta and Ontario only.

BC Day, Alberta Heritage Day, and whatever's going on in Ontario are all separate provincial not national holidays, you can't compare them to the 4th of July. In the states they have what are called statuatory holidays which are mandatory time off or time+, but then there's a second rung of holidays that are either observed or not, depending on industry and company culture.

Stuff like call centers generally don't get time off on such occasions. & †hats the way of it...

Nope. Manitoba has it too. At least... I moved to BC a year ago, but the 27 years prior to that they had a civic holiday today, so I'm going to go with past experiences and say Manitobians are lazing around today too. Manitoba just calls it "Civic Holiday" but BC calls it "BC Day".

(I don't mind working on civic holidays because it ends up adding something like $230 extra to my paycheque after stat pay and overtime)

That's because it's not really about anything, and it changes meaning (for those few areas where it has a meaning) depending on where you are - *L*. It's just a day off on the first monday in August... if your employer is nice. Because it's not a stat holiday they don't have to give time off or pay holiday pay.

http://www.craigmarlatt.com/canada/symbols_facts&lists/august_holiday.html

has one of the better write ups on it. Even goes province to province.
