I want a geek shirt. I give. Any suggestions? Please not one that'll get me fired. Although in fairness, my company is pretty easy-going, mostly 'cos HR don't know what RTFM means. Or PEBKAC.

2 memorable ones today:

Sweetie, you're gay. As a five tent carnival. Acting all surprised when you said "Honey, go easy. I'm a poof" and I said "So I gathered", is funny, but c'mon. Although I will give credit where it's due. I came into work like a fire-breathing bitch, and by the end of the call, you had me clutching myself with laughter. But for Gods sake, stop using your postcode as a password. When I said I'd go over and beat some sense into you, I meant it.

Second was a 53 year old "silver surfer" who stumbled up one of those "Here's your IP, here's your OS, here's what you had for breakfast" sites. And got quite upset when his IP came back. As French. Because he's a proud Briton, you see. And he can't have the internet at large thinking he's from France. But apart from that case of mild....idiocy, he was quite nice.Very enthusiastic. Retired, nothing to do, so he bought himself a top of the range machine and is basically trying to figure it out, one piece at a time. So I threw www.dnsstuff.com at him and told him to email me with any questions.

I've created a monster.

One question though. Why would it do that? I admit when I'm clueless, and happily he accepted my "it sometimes does that when internet traffice is particularly high" non-explanation. But I'm curious. And my Google-fu is defeated by my vodka.

I really hope there's not some policy on not posting here while twisted. 'Cos I been breaking it since I joined. But I'm drinking on yer behalf as well. Or doing my damned best to anyway.

I wear my PEBKAC shirt at least twice a week, as well as various other ones that insult the customer in millions of ways.

The only hard policy here is to not ask for questions in general, but that's clearly posted in the community info. However, if we recognize you and the question is strange enough, we might answer it. Of we might flame you anyhow.

Posting while drunk, while yeilding... interesting results, is legal here (and encouraged).

I have a (bad) tendancy to apply my rules here, but they are simple: '1st amendment rights are loosely enforced here' and 'Don't be a dick'.

I now open the floor to flamage questioning my lineage and personal behaviors. :)

Depends on which site it was. Some figure out the country based on the TLD of the name they get from the PTR record and others use databases like the Maxmind GeoIP (http://www.maxmind.com/) database to determine the country.

In the latter case, it can happen because the IP addresses were reassigned, someone entered the wrong info into the database, or just because they couldn't find an exact match and just used the closest match they had on record.

apt-get is the package manager for debian and debian-based distros. I've never used it myself, but I understand the syntax is something like "apt-get install foo".

syswear have some other nice ones—the internet is broken; it's not a bug, it's a feature; my other computer is your windows box. (Though I suppose that last one might not be work-safe.)

My tongue! WRITHE IN HORROR BWAHAHAHAHA

DNSstuff is utter crap. I'd love for them to actually read some DNS RFC's and figure out that there is no 'glue' in DNS. Bane of our DNS guy's existence.

As to the 'Your from France', check RIPE for the IP delegation, it's probably from a French superblock that's been SWIP'd incorrectly and is still showing as French. I see that all the time.

I prefer the one I just had custom made.

"No, I don't care about your Mageflops of RAM, nor do I care about how the hackers are invading your system."

has to be my favourite.
