So, I call DHL to find out what is going on and why the lappy had still not been picked up. Because I was supposed to call them, apparently - OK, so I had picked this up wrongly. OK, even I am not perfect, so there you go.

I explain to the DHL CSR that I do not have a box - as was supposed to be in the notes - and that the courier would have to provide one, and by the way, I have a Dell despatch number if you want it.

Apparently offering the Dell despatch number was akin to cursing the DHL rep's entire lineage, and that of her dog, because the Dell despatch number was rejected with some vehemence. OK, whatev'. Courier will be there at 16.30, here's your reference number.

Courier arrives at 1545, not told about the box, not told about the Dell pickup, refused point blank to take away the laptop, and walks out of the office - he did give me a box for the lappy, though. Which was nice. A *small* box, just larger than the lappy and no more.

Sigh.

Phone Dell. On hold. Blah blah online music music brain melting.

Finally get to speak to Ryan in Dell. He is appalled by what has happened, and asks me to hold while he speaks to DHL.

DHL as relayed through Ryan - profuse apologies, yadda yadda. Yeah, whatev'.

So.... I still have a faulty Dell Latitude. I have a seriously negative opinion of couriers. I am no longer feeling so grumpy towards Dell - the guy I spoke to (Ryan) really pulled out all the stops to try and get the situation resolved, and was appalled at the situation with DHL.

Sigh. Let's see if tomorrow DHL can pull some... something... to make me not actively hope for them to be ground zero of an inexplicable meteor event.

My mood is currently best described as... exasperated bemused annoyance. I am waiting to see what happens to the laptop next - is it going to be subject to an inexplicable incident with a gardening implement?!!? Oooh! Oooh! Will it choke to death on someone else's vomit!

Keep tuned!

EDIT TO ADD:
The laptop has STILL not been picked up, because the paperwork has not made it from Dell to DHL. So, I have now involved our account manager. I mean, geez, how hard is it to PICK UP A FAULTY LAPTOP AND REPAIR IT??!!!?

My Inspiron just got a brand new shiny 30gig hard drive, replaced under warranty!

...trouble was, the defective one was 40gig.

so did Dell change over to DHL recently, or is that just through your company?

I haven't dealt with Dell for about 6 months, and I remember UPS as their go-to.

If they did switch over, the kinks seem to not be all worked out yet.

And they likely never will be.

I have no love for DHL.

DHL has always been Dell's primary carrier for warranty stuff (of sorts). It was previously Airborne Express but DHL bought them.

Goose, I'm going to see what I can do from my end for you. Fear not.

It's important to write down exactly what the Dell person says to do wrt to DHL, and then follow the instructions by letter. Also, anytime anyone at DHL seems not to know what is going on, say it's an R3 program pickup, and it needs an R3 box.

Care to explain what R3 means? I'm curious.

IIRC, R3 is the name of their special service for returing laptos to Dell's repair depots. no sure why they chose the particular name.
