$BOSS handed me a slip of paper with a name scrawled on it. "What's this?" I ask.

"Weren't you listening to $DEPTHEAD?" $BOSS sighs dramatically--for a straight man, he's got a lot of drama. "Do I really ahve to repeat myself?"

Damn--my penchent for evesdropping has gotten out. "Not really," I lie.

He knows it's a lie, but gives a summery of the conversation he'd just held. "Some loser called $DEPTHEAD on his personal cellphone. I need you to call him back." He shoots me a look and I try to stop snickering. "If it's a legitimate issue, make a ticket and assign it out. Otherwise..." He shrugs.

Interesting. I examine the paper as if it could give me any clues into why he'd call the head of our department for any sort of technical support.

There are no clues, so I dial the number. A man answers. "This is $USER."

"Hi, $USER. This is SuB from $COMPANY. You called earlier needing technical assistance...?"

His voice brightens. "Yeah! I called $DEPTHEAD. He was the only one I knew to call...I'm usually in the IRC channel and some guy named Mike helps me out sometimes. But I had $DEPTHEAD's card...soo..."

We work for a while on his issue, finally getting him happy. I create the ticket, and file it away--not bothering to actually give it to an active tech. I did suggest that he try calling our support line next time he needed help. He pouted--but mostly agreed.

What, after all that, was his issue, you may wonder.

He could not find where to download ISOs.

On a page that has a BIG GIANT BUTTON that says 'DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE'.

It doesn't matter if you know how to read, if you're important enough and know the right people.

"But that's software! I'm not looking for software, I'm looking for ISOs!"
