I just had a very nice rep call and ask, very nicely, if it would be possible for him to get another 256mb of RAM for his laptop, because it'd make things run an awfully lot smoother, and really, the original 256mb of RAM isn't near enough.

AAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. You think they're gonna let you have a machine different from everyone else's? You're in a 4,000 person salesforce. If they let you have more RAM, they'd have to let everyone. It doesn't matter how justified your request is. Sure, I'll submit your request for you if you really want, but let me just save you the time and tell you preemptively that it's been denied.

But since you really were a fairly cool guy, I'll leak the specs on the new hardware to you... you know, the ones that're shipping at the end of the summer but which we've been officially instructed to say we know nothing about... yep, you heard me right. A GIG AND A HALF of RAM. Shhhh, keep it down.

I suffered through 128MB on a sales desk once running Windows 2000. Because, after all, 64 megs is all it technically requires. We also had to keep Outlook and a Terminal Server session open at all times, along with any other Office applications necessary to do our phone sales job, as well as intranet based sales tools. I did manage to badger my way into getting an extra 128 of ram for my box when the memory started failing diagnostics and it started reporting I only had 96MB out of the 128, so they just replaced it and upgraded it while they were at it.

Moral of the story - if your equipment is antiquated the sure way to get an upgrade is to make it fail.

not for pharmaceutical reps. they'll just grab your data off the b0rked one, and put it on an identical one to give ya. i've even had people run over their laptop in the hope of getting a shiny new one. never works.

Icon says it all. Then again, we've had computers demolished under consumer accidental damage plans in order to get them replaced. Funny thing is they were under full warranty and could have been serviced, but they decided finishing the job was better. Dropped in a swimming pool is still one of my (not) favorites.

My iBook has 1.25 gigs. But that is because when I decided 256 megs wasn't enough, I found out that a gig of RAM for the thing was only $120, 50% more than an extra half-gig.

afaik macs manage memory fairly differently than your shelf PC. Not sure HOW, exactly, but they are different.
