Have a machine in here that's 99% done. Original complaint: ungodly slow. Ad-Aware turned up lots of crap. Norton turned up nothing.

Removed crap, computer was happy once more. Tested Earthlink connection. Fine and dandy...until I tried to pull up att.net, where the dude gets his e-mail, and got the dreaded THIS PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED error.

Tried Google. Tried MSN.com. Tried Yahoo. Tried fifteen million other websites. All of them came up fine. ATT.COM came up fine. Even weirder, download.att.net came up fine.

But wait! There's more!

Hung up Earthlink, dialed up with my IO account. Same thing. Every website in the entire world except att.net comes up.

Hung up IO, tried our DSL. SAME DAMN THING.

Frisking Google and the various knowledge bases has turned up jacksquat. I've checked to see if the connections are trying to go through some oddball proxy. I see nothing. There were remnants of Xupiter, HuntBar, and some other connection-molesting crap in there, but I've never seen them screw with just one website before. I have one nerve and one non-white hair left, and they're both about to go. Plz help kthxbye.

[Update: "ipconfig /flushdns" saved my ass. WHEW.]

[Update #2: ...no it didn't. Running XP Home SP1, IE6, customer does not want Netscape. Connecting via AT&T dialup will let me pull up att.net's main page, but still can't get to the webmail--same "page cannot be found" error. Will try some of the other suggestions here. SONOFABITCH.]

email att.com tech support have them traceroute from their site to the system. if the error is on the system you will know. the might have tagged the IP for some reason.

I'm not sure if this has the same reasoning behind it but...I was having very strange problems with IE 6.0.2 where some pages would just not come up. Ran same diagnostics as you did to no avail. I would be loading a page, it would load half way then go to a domain search, usually overture but not always. Sometimes the page would just refuse to load as your problem site did. Another pc on the lan but with a different browser could load it fine. I could find nothing on this pc for this annoying to be happening. WTF? So, I then got really tired of playing that game and downloaded netscape(which I have stayed away from for a couple of years) and the problem is no more. I also went to netscape mail because I got tired of Outlook express crashing after typing long emails. I wonder if installing NS and trying the att site will show a different result. My 1.5 cents.

If this happens again...

Try deleting the hosts files, and rebooting.
hosts.sam
and lhosts.sam if I remember them correctly.

Eh, just do a search for "hosts" and you'll find them.

And in a more general sense, ping, tracert, or nslookup the webmail server from some other machine, and see if you are getting the same DNS results from both machines. If the results are different, then you know it's some kind of problem with DNS on the machine in question.

well try via ip addr

webmail.att.net [204.127.135.145]
webauth.att.net [204.127.135.134]

as teh webmail routes to the webauth

and you can try manually adding it to his trusted sites... i had something weird i couldnt figure out i did that as a whim and it worked. also there is spybot, wich i have noticed will actually find stuff i cannot with ad aware...
