Jul. 19th, 2003 07:23 pmHere's a gem of a call, boys and girls:
Me: Blahblah.net, this is Miharu.
EU: Yeah, I've got this website with you. Someone made it for me, and it's not coming up! The email doesn't work either!
Me: Could I get your domain name and the exact error message?
EU: I don't know the error message, it's just not working. And it's domainydomain.com. (Obviously changed the name to protect the "innocent")
Me: Ok, the website is viewable from both inside and outside of our servers, did you leave the "www" off? (This is how he registered it.. I personally hate the forced www prefix..)
EU: No, I typed it in all correct.
Me: Let me put you on hold real quick.
*checks records and goes back to the call*
EU: Now how do I get to this webpage?
Me: Well, you would open a browser such as IE, find the address bar, delete anything that's already in there and type http://www.domainydomain.com - then click Go.
EU: Well, I've been going to Yahoo and typing it in there and clicking Search.
Me: *tries to find the strangle button on her phone* Oh no sir, it won't work that way, you need to do it the way I just explained for it to work.
EU: Why doesn't Yahoo work?
Me: That's a search engine, and if you want your website on it you'll have to contact them. The easiest way to get to a website is to go to it directly by the address bar method. (Never had I thought I would ever have to say these words... even to my mom ^^;)
EU: Oh? Ok. Now what about the email?
Me: Our records show that all mail to this domain is being forwarded to this Yahoo email address.. is that correct?
EU: Yes.
Me: Then you'll have to check your mail from Yahoo in order to get it.
EU: Ok, thanks a lot!
If I posted the actual domain name, this would add an extra dimension of humor to the mix - it's a website for private investigations. Looks like he couldn't figure out The Case of the Miseducated End User...
