You all know personally some dweeb who's gone and tried to "Organise or Clean Up" their c:/windows directory and end up hosing the system.

Today I had my first Mac user who's done this... He tried to consolidate his two library folders (thank god he didn't look in the other user directories). Surprisingly he was still able to log in, but many things were broken (including privaliges and various programs were missing).

Thankfully I was able to send him off to apple to rebuild his system.

I had someone do that under OS 9 some time back. They swore blind that they'd been using macs for years and they'd never seen a "system folder" before so didn't know why they needed it.

They tried to move it to the server and delete it locally.

Oddly enough, things didn't work to well after that. :)

We got him fired shortly after... but that's another story.

Oh, do tell that story. I like those types of stories.

Actually, it's not nearly so interesting as I made it sound. After the system folder fiasco the same user went on to do the "working on large files over the network will never cause problems" and, my personal favourite, the "I don't need fonts" joy.

In the end, we spoke with the manager of the department directly, who stupidly took us over to his desk assuming we wouldn't be quite so rude face to face. Happily, we had no qualms at all after him being a complete bastard to everyone in the department so we told them he was computer illiterate and should never have gotten the job in the first place.

The manager initially backed him (as they would) and told us we were talking bollocks... then the idiot in question stood up and did the "i don't need this kind of crap" line and went on to tell everyone... including his manager... how much better he was than all of them and that he didn't need to waste time with petty menails like us. And stormed out.

Oddly enough... his manager went strangely quiet... then said "he'll be out by this afternoon" and then apologized profusely to both of us. I must say, it's rare that I get an apology in IT, but the email version of that one is framed on my wall.

Sweet.

Any story where IT people get users fired (for cause of course) are always interesting. They also give hope in that there is sanity out there.

Its amazing how small you can make windows by cleaning out that folder. I forget how small I've gotten it without breaking windows though.

I didn't think that you could even DO that on a Mac.
