From one of my Cable Internet companions.

Customer: Hi I can't dial into the internet.
S: Hi, so your phone line is ok?
Customer: No the phone's broken; that's why I'm calling.
S: OK, what's your number?
Customer: [number]
S: OK, looks fine. Why doesn't it work?
Customer: Well when I try and dial, I hear voices when trying to get on the net
S: ok.... what's the dialing number you're using to dial up?
Customer: 001137186665511
S: Are you with [ISP] for dialup?
Customer: Yes, of course.
S: Well, you're calling Latvia, not [ISP].

Customer proceeded to tell me how he isn't going to pay for it. Transfer to Telephone Customer Service.

Buhahahahhahaha! OK, OK...8-ish years ago, I did something similar. My first computer, on W95. I was setting up the modem, and it said "enter the number of the computer you want to call."

I think a minute, and realize my friend Alesia has a computer...I'll call her!
So I put in Alesia's phone number in (where the ISP's number should have gone...but the wording of W95 plus my not knowing anything about computers)...and when she answered with "Hello?" I'm yelling into the computer "Hey Alesia! It's me!" which of course she couldn't hear, and thought I was a prank caller.

Sounds like a malware (dialer) infection.

We had a customer who kept changing the dialup number back to the correct one but the malware kept changing it back to some foreign country number. They would hear the computer dialing by itself at random times during the day.

We had a hard time cleaning up the computer but eventually used KillBox (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Secure-cleaning/Pocket-Killbox.shtml). It worked perfectly. I'm not sure the average user will be able to clean it up on their own, though.

This is what we call a stupidity tax. Much like we charge high fines to people going way the hell too fast on our roads to keep them safe for everyone, we make people pay for the international calls their computer gets into because they can't follow basic computer safety precautions. If you can't be bothered to know enough to keep your antivirus/antispyware up to date, you can pay the tickets.

Well, I can't explain that. :) We're a small ISP that does dial-up and wireless. No idea why a cable internet customer would try to dial up.

Hehe

I just can't get over how this person thinks their phone is broken, and then uses it to call for help.
