Driptastic..
Dec. 24th, 2005 09:28 pmSince it's Christmas, I thought I'd share one of my favourite callouts with you all :)
About 2 years back I was sitting in my workshop minding my own business and going through the BOFH back catalogue when the phone rings.
- Hello, I.T. support
- Hi, erm.. you're going to tell me off
- It's a definite possibility, yeah - what have you done?
- I've melted my keyboard.
- .....
(pause to gather thoughts)
- Ooooo-kaaaaay.. how did you do that?
- I was trying to dry it out
- ...and why was it wet?...
- I spilled my glass of water into the numeric keypad
- The glass of water you weren't supposed to have anywhere near the machine?
- I knew you were going to tell me off!
- I haven't yet. I want to hear the rest of it first!
- I tried to dry it out with the heater and it melted.
- What heater?
- You know, the little electric one I have near my feet...
I decided this was worth a visit and trundled upstairs. SUre enough, the entire set of keys to the right of backspace had started to deform and had fused themselves into a lump. I can only assume that they were cheap thermosoftnening plastic. It turns out she'd been waving the heater over the keyboard, started explaining to the person across the desk divider what had happened, and hadn't kept an eye on it :)
I just gave her a new keyboard without telling her off in the end - it was worth it :) We kept the old one in 'carnage corner' down in the workshop just in case we ever needed to replace one for somebody we didn't like... ;)
