One of our strictest IT rules is that the kids do not use any kind of messenger. Ever. They all know this, and we now remove their internet access as a matter of course when they're caught. So I just caught a year 9 girl and told her I was removing her internet access with the blessing of her teacher because she was on messenger. She just sat there for a minute then said: "Oh. Do you want me to come out of it?" Hmmm, let me think...

And as I was typing this I overheard some boys talking about internet searches. "He typed in fanny* videos" said one. "FUNNY videos!" cried his mate

* Fanny is rather ruder here in the UK than it is in the US :)

Tisk tisk, you are far too nice. I just block msn, yahoo etc and all the other sites that allow you to use some kind of web client. Also block the port numbers the apps use and stop the kids installing software on the machine. They know they are not allowed to use it, I just make sure they don’t forget.... :D

Without a shadow of doubt. Ours provide us with internet access and hosting for our school site (complete with the proper domain of http://www...sch.uk). So when I was looking at switching the school site over to my own custom content management system so staff could update the site without me, I sent our dear lea an email. I asked them what we would get with our hosting. They told me perl, asp, php, access database, mysql. So when it came to uploading some test scripts, I put them online, ran them and they did nothing but spit back errors. Turned out that almost all they had told me was a lie. Yes, it runs asp and yes you can have an access database, but you can’t have a perl script they haven’t written and they don’t run mysql or php. Let’s just say I was far from pleased. then i tried adding the access database to the site...nope, would not let me. A few emails later it turned out that’s because I needed a separate ftp address and login so I could upload that to a different place. Also, staff cant upload files using web based scripts, they HAVE to be done over ftp. I could kill these people. Just a single snap of their necks......*run off into the distance cackling*

Ha! You have atomwide too, in that case, we are talking on the same wavelength...

We have a technician’s forum/group that has meetings every month and we have talk’s and workshops arranged etc. It’s rather good and we are all planning our "one voice" stand against atomwide very soon....

That said though, they have just out us in a nice 10meg fibre, which I cant complain about really.

Oh god, I know what fanny means over there.

Must have been hell for the poor kid in that class. Teacher must have been screaming.

Not being that educated in Brit-speak, I'll be the Ugly American ™ and ask: what does "fanny" mean in the UK?
