customer is EXTREME NOVICE
I asked customer to close out of all the windows
she asked how, and then said, "I know nothing about computers."
I said, "You don't know how to close a window?"
her response, "No."
she finally figured it out
asked her to open IE and described the icon in detail
it opens up MSN and starts an account setup
asked her to close that
had her go to start, settings, control panel
this took her 3 minutes to figure out
had her double click on system
she says there is NO system
had her read everything
asked her to scroll down
she didn't understand "scroll down"
again tried to describe how to do this with the mouse and with keyboard shortcuts - not happening
asked if there is anyone else in the house that is a little more familiar with computers - no
asked if she has any friends that could come over that are a little more familiar with basic maneuvering on the computer - no
asked if there is anyone she knows that knows anything about computers - no

I wanted to say here in my notes: "customer had no friends or family of any intelligence." But I didn't..... Luckily Ben gave me a number she could call for a free pro-install.

And what I always want to know, what makes them think they need a computer?

I initially read that as "customer has no friends or family or intelligence", which is even funnier. :)

how long have you been working techsupport that you think this is out of the ordinary? ;)

*grin* nice rant, though

I think I would have had to ask, "And you bought a computer because....?"

Reminds me of the woman in W. Virginia I talked to one time that was functionally illiterate, but got her computer from Wal-Mart "cause I can click on the pitch-ers to do stuff".

haha... I monitor calls and train for a tech support department and you would not believe how many calls I have listened to (and done myself) where people say things like, 'how do i shut down the computer? what do you mean???!'. Cracks me up every time.

I'm familiar with those kinds of days. In fact, we are experiencing one right now.
