This guy on my phone claimed that he had a cable with an ethernet type connection on one end and a USB connection on the other end.

He also said there was no adapter between the cable. It was one straight cable.

He also played the "You guys made the cable and gave it to me" card.

I call BS on everything!

Homeboy, get a new CAT 5 cable.

Oy...

That's an oddball cable. I have one of those for my usb barcode scanner.

I would suggest that he aquire an etherkiller and plug his computer's network interface into the mains outlet... ::snicker::

I have one too. It's for my APC battery backup, they have software that will shut down your computer if there is a power outage and the battery goes dead on you.

But we're techs, we're expected to have oddball cables.

I've seen it too as part of a kit, although it was one of those modular USB kits where one end was a regular USB, the other end was all sorts of things, including an Ethernet plug.

Again, we're techs. We're allowed to have these kind of toys. The regular losers can live in the happiness that people never make their own Ethernet cables.

oh c'mon... where are the good old "paralell Cable" or "serial cabel" times ?
if i need to connect an device to an PC/Server, why cant i just use an simple serial-cable ?Hyperterminal for my DK2825 also just needs an paralell cable and VT420 terminal :)
and my ups also just needs an serial cable (with two crossed cables)

It's funny, in my entire career so far...I've never seen or heard of one of those cables. I may be a novice going on my 6th year but it was the first time I had heard of such a cable. Now I know. Does this cable have a name?

Those cables are such a pain in the arse. Trying to tell your low level cuss-tomer how to install the bloody drivers. Thank God they seem to be falling out of use. It's been a month or two since I fought with one.

Many (greater than 50%) low-end UPS systems with some sort of integrated management tend to use that type of cable.

I'm guessing he got a package deal with a UPS from an OEM and the cable came with.

Never seen a USB/Ethernet hybrid, though I had one of those Ethernet -> USB adapters (but only for my Tivo :D).
