So my college is in the process of moving everyone from an antiquated, about-to-die email system (Blitz) to IMAP. People who have used Blitz for years are bemoaning Blitz's impending death and loudly protesting having to move to IMAP.

Two weeks from Blitz's scheduled demise, our imap server goes down. Perfect timing, huh?

And yet...very few people have complained about how "this never happened to Blitz"* or IMAP is down therefore IMAP sucks. Instead, people have just asked when it will be available again, will their emails be lost forever and the like.

I am proud of my college sometimes.

This sounds exactly like when we moved from the old dying Shakespeare clusters to a central IMAP system and they disallowed pine access at the same time. Everyone handled it well for the most part. But we *still* get calls, a year later, from 90-year-old faculty members saying how great Pine was and how shitty we are for making them use another client or the slow Webmail interface. Sigh.

Wuh... but Pine does IMAP (and very nicely too....)

While I am not a fan of pine (I prefer mutt) I am also wondering why pine was banned? Is there some problem with it I don't know about?

They disabled all terminal access to the new IMAP server for some reason, so that explains that.

For a while we were telling these people to use PC-Pine which fortunately we all ended up agreeing is a huge nightmare (at least for people who are used to not having to configure it themselves) so they can suck it up.

I like pine, even with it's security issues that people keep telling me it has but I've never seen a list of.

I've never heard of Blitz, but I love IMAP... get my mail from anywhere on any computer? woot.
