We worked on a laptop some months ago - the harddrive was toast and needed to be replaced. We ordered a new one, replaced it, and charged her a whopping $50 for labor. (Small town, doncha know.) She didn't want the old drive, so we tossed it. Wouldn't even post anymore.

Today, we got a letter from her.

Dear [company],
I have been informed by someone who has been working on my laptop computer that the original harddrive is still in it but you charged me for a new one. I have the invoice for the harddrive that you ordered. I am thinking about turning you in to the BBB and I would appreciate a refund for the services you didn't perform.

Blah blah blah,
Asshat.

... Right. Because they'd know if it was original. "Oh no! This is Toshiba! Your original was a Toshiba! KILL THEM!"

Fuckers. *trots off to copy the order invoice, with serial number*

Heh.

IBM does not put their own brand drive in their stinkpads, why should toshiba put their own drives in their systems? (And yes, I'm fully aware that IBM sold off it's media back to hitachi, which was been running the show for a while...)

DOrks.

Dear customer,

If this was the original hard drive, your computer wouldn't be working.

Please get a fucking clue.

Thanks!

Heh. I tried that once.

-I do know you did not replace my CD-RW but charged me for a new one.
-You are wrong. What makes you think so? Don't you see it is brand new?
-Do not play with me, I know you could replace the drive door but it is the same. Device manager shows me it is the same.
-But when you brought your computer you complained the CD-RW did not work and now it works perfectly. Or does it not?
-Perhaps it just got fixed itself.

Since then I always keep replaced parts. Also I keep all documentation coming with new parts. It just happens and when it happens it is pain.

Most "IBM" branded drives I have seen have been Seagate ones, even back when IBM made their own drives.

I just imagined rigging a tech bench like an autopsy table and having the tech talk like coroners...

"The harddrive was atypical with burn marks and water damage, it weighed 2.7lbs and was replaced by a unit of the same make and model."

I think I watch too much CSI...
