A:I just got a new computer. I'm trying to hookup the modem, but I don't see anywhere where I can put in the usb.

*This doesn't start off well.*

A:Well let's check to see if you have any usb or ethernet devices in device manager.

A:Should I turn it on?

T:Um...Yes.

A: To be honest with you, I've never really used a computer before.

*headdesk*

The system boots up, it's Windows 95.

Wow! Look at this new machine! I can't believe it. I didn't know dinosaurs still existed in this lifetime. You know, that would be like me bringing out my frozen caveman to play with!

After finally getting her to device manager, she doesn't have an ethernet or usb. Oddly enough, she does have a PC Card slot available. Go figure!

Man, I'm really hating my job today more than ever. Anyone know of places in San Diego hiring techs?

At one of my former workplaces they asked me if I can connect another computer to the network. Of course I could.

I came there and found a 386 machine.

I don't mind this comment so much, so long as it's early on in the call. It's only when they try and act smrat and when I tell them to do something complicated (like, say, right-click) and they bring out the n00b comment that I want to kill them.

Actually it worked just perfectly. No lags, no application crashes, everything is simple and clear. To launch Windows type win. However if you want to just type a few documents (all in txt format, so no stupid incompatibilities) you can stay in MS-DOS (or PC-DOS, don't remember the version).

It even had an MS-DOS CD-player to play audio CD's in background. Without all those funky features like shuffling or such but it did work.

I think at least half of my users needs machines like this. Everything more complicated gives them headache and system crashes.

p.s. And yes, to reinstall everything you had to just copy system directory from a CD!! Not even a partition image!

I like to answer to it with "You know, I don't have much experience with computers myself" and then watch the panic.

Not a big lie by the way - what are five years of computer experience today? ;)

Hah. I bet it wasn't even OSR 2.1 or up (no USB support AT ALL before then).
