Fun with training courses!
Jul. 28th, 2005 03:25 pmHER: I can't reset my password.
ME: So it gave you the password error?
HER: Yes.
ME: OK, so there's a link there saying "you can reset your password by clicking here."
HER: It doesn't work.
ME: Could you please go through it again and tell me at what point it fails?
HER: Sure. (Click click click) Oh, it works now. But I can't find the course I'm supposed to be taking, Insider Trading. (this is a course to prevent insider trading, not to teach it!)
ME: Well, you can find courses by clicking on the link that says "Courses."
HER: But it's not there!
ME: As you can see, this is a listing of course categories, not a listing of courses. To find a course, if you don't know what category it's in, try the Course Search link.
HER: It says no results.
ME: What criteria did you use? I would advise trying "Course Name" and searching for just the word "insider".
HER: OK... It still says no results.
ME: OK, so what did you search for?
HER: Course Name and Insider.
ME: (I know she's lying, I just tried this and it worked.) All right, could you please start up Netmeeting? Just go to Start and then Run.
HER: No.
ME: Oh, OK. (about to try another tactic since she just refused to let me connect to her computer, when...)
HER: I haven't done that.
(pause)
ME: I asked if you would please do it, not if you had. Please click on Start.
HER: There's nothing here that says Start.
ME: Oh, you're not running Windows? OK, then...
HER: Well, yes, I am.
ME: And you don't have a Start button?
HER: Sure I do.
ME: (Uh.) Please click on it?
HER: OK. Then what?
ME: (ARGH) Go to Run?
HER: OK.
ME: Type in the first four letters of the word "conference," and hit enter.
(We connect through Netmeeting. I see her screen where it says no results for the search. I click Back on her browser.)
ME: Well, I see the problem.
HER: (excited) You do? What?
ME: (wanting to cry) You searched for "Insider Trader," not "Insider," as you previously said. Since "Trader" is not in the course title, and it can't do multi-word searches anyway, that's why it failed.
HER: Oh.
No remorse for being illiterate. Or for not being able to follow directions. None.
