Hi, I know there's an outage, so it must be affecting me, right?

HIM:  Hi, I heard you guys are having an email outage?

ME:  Yep.  (thinking, that's why the upfront message is there, so you can listen to it and then hang up and go away, but whatever)

HIM:  Well, I think it's affecting me! 

ME:  That outage is affecting only Exchange users in (City A).  You are in (City B, a whole time zone away), correct?

HIM:  Yes, but I can't get my email.

ME:  In what way is it not working?

HIM:  It says my Microsoft Exchange server is not available!

ME:  And can you get to any network shares or any internal or external webpages!

HIM:  (getting more and more excited)  No!  I can't get to ANYTHING!

Yep, that Exchange server outage in City A was causing him not to be able to get his email.  It had nothing to do with the fact he was in City B and had no network connection.  Completely unrelated, I tell you!

sometimes I'm glad I'm just in charge of about 75 computers. I'm the helpdesk and tech... "the computer guy." I don't have to worry about multi-CITY outages! ::pats your back:: your 8 hours should be about over, eh?

Oh, yeah, we got plenty of them, too. "I'm in City A and my email isn't working, but I don't think the problem is that outage that is affecting all City A email..."
